Where it works
Most newsletter platforms — Substack, beehiiv, Mailchimp, ConvertKit, Ghost — let you place an image in the header of a broadcast. An animated GIF sits in that same image slot, so your masthead can loop without changing anything about how you send.
The Outlook first frame
Email clients handle animation differently: Apple Mail, the iOS Mail app, and Gmail play GIFs, while desktop Outlook on Windows shows only the first frame. Keep the masthead modest — a header a few hundred pixels wide keeps the GIF small enough that it loads before the reader scrolls past. Because many clients strip inline image data from attachments, host the exported file somewhere you control (your CDN, an assets bucket, or your site) and reference it with an <img src> in the header block, exactly as you would any other newsletter image.
