Where an animated icon shows up in Notion
Every Notion page has an icon that sits in the sidebar tree and again, larger, above the page title. Notion accepts an uploaded image there and plays an animated GIF, so an exported looping mark moves in both spots at once. Set it on a workspace’s top-level page and it becomes the little animated badge everyone on the team sees first.
What format should I upload?
Notion animates GIFs for icons, so export the looping GIF — it plays automatically with no plugin. Notion does not animate SVG icons, so the crisp SVG export is better kept for a README or a browser favicon; for Notion, the GIF is the one that moves.
Keep it readable at icon size
The sidebar icon is only a handful of pixels wide, so pick a lower dot density and a slow loop — fine detail vanishes at that scale and fast motion turns into noise next to your page titles. The live preview above renders at icon scale, so what you tune is what your workspace shows.
Free vs Pro
The looping GIF icon is a Pro export — watermark-free, with a commercial-use license. The SVG-based presets stay free with a small watermark, though Notion only animates the GIF, so Pro is the one that moves in your sidebar.
